Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year for portraits in the Niagara region. Blossoming trees, soft golden light and fresh greenery make the perfect backdrop for updated portraits whether it's for couples, families, maternity or even just you and your pet!

As a Niagara portrait photographer, one of the most common questions I get from clients is: “What should we wear?”

If you’re planning a spring session with me, here are my best tips to help you look polished, natural and timeless in your photos.

TOP TIPS FOR WHAT TO WEAR

1. Choose Soft, Neutral Tones

Spring portraits look best with soft, light colours that complement the season. Think:

  • Cream or beige (not harsh white)
  • Soft greens, blushes or blues

These tones photograph beautifully in natural light and work well with the Niagara region's spring scenery. I always recommend starting with neutrals and adding one or two colours for interest which brings to me to my next tip....

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits can feel stiff and outdated. Instead, coordinate your outfits using a shared colour palette.

For example:

  • Mom in a pattern dress
  • Dad in tan or light denim with a soft blue shirt
  • Kids in tones that pull from mom's dress!

This works beautifully for and keeps everyone looking connected without being identical.

If you're session is just for you or with just you and your partner, these same tips can apply!

3. Avoid Loud Patterns and Logos

Busy patterns, neon colours and large logos can be distracting and pull attention away from your faces. Instead, opt for:

  • Subtle textures (linen, knit, denim)
  • Simple prints (small florals or soft stripes)
  • Solid colours layered together

If one or two people in your group want to wear a gentle pattern, that can work beautifully — as long as the rest of the outfits complement that colour palette. This keeps the look balanced and cohesive without feeling too busy.

4. Layer for Style (and Weather)

Spring weather in Niagara can be unpredictable, so layers are your best friend. Try:

  • Cardigans
  • Light jackets
  • Denim or linen button-ups
  • Shawls or wraps

Layers not only help with temperature changes, but they also add depth and texture to your photos, making your images feel more visually interesting. They also give us the opportunity to switch up your look partway through your session by simply removing or adding a layer, creating variety in your final gallery without needing a full outfit change.
